My name is Christen Smith. I am proud to call this valley my home since birth. I am prouder to call myself a homeschooler since preschool. My parents valued my education so much that they gave me the best possible option. The valuable information I have gained from the Master teachers at A Beka Academy has prepared me for college.

I have been enrolled in dance classes since I was three years old. My predominant dance form is ballet which I have been training in for fifteen years. In 2016 I was accepted into the Northwest Ballet Company as a corps member. I have worked through the ranks of demi-soloist, soloist, and finally principal dancer. I have been in thirteen productions performed at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts. During these nine years I have memorized 24 different dance routines. My other dance-related passions are east coast swing, hip-hop, and modern. Classical music has made me value instruments and desire to learn them. My mom has taught me the violin, and I have taught myself how to play the clarinet. I even performed with the homeschool band for their Christmas show.

I took an interest in photography when my parents bought me a camera for my eighth birthday. Since then I have enjoyed taking photos of friends and beautiful scenery. I was able to shadow Master Photographer Trevon Baker this past summer. We traveled from Whitefish to St. Ignatius photographing real estate and taking family portraits.

I have enjoyed drawing and even won a few competitions. In 2012 my drawing was chosen as the picture for Glacier National Park’s entrance passes. My drawings have also been used for shirt and program designs promoting Northwest Ballet Company Performances.

I enjoy exploring Big Sky Country with my dad. While school and dance are great indoor activities, I love being in the mountains hunting. Ever since I took a hunter’s safety course, I have wanted to learn archery. I have begun to practice that hobby as well.

I look forward to joining my sister at Montana State University in the fall. I will be studying to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business. I would also like to take some classes in my other interests such as film and photography, history, and economics. I plan on continuing my hobbies during college and also trying new recreational activities.

Learning from home provided me with many resources that made learning more fun and efficient. The chance to learn from the A Beka Academy teachers who have such a love for God was inspiring. My parents have helped me understand my responsibilities in life and education. They also taught me about God and to let Him be in control because, “…we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
